Composite or wood decking?
| Composite | Redwood or cedar | |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | Occasional cleaning; no sealing or staining | Regular cleaning and re-sealing or staining |
| Rot and splinters | Resists rot and does not splinter | Naturally rot-resistant but can weather, check and splinter over time |
| Look | Consistent color and texture | Natural grain and color variation |
| Up-front cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
Either way, the framing underneath is pressure-treated lumber, and that structure is what makes a deck last.
Railings, stairs and covers
Railings and stairs are where a deck takes the most wear and where safety matters most. We build them to code, in wood or with railing systems that match composite decking. Pergolas and covers add shade and extend the season you can use your deck.
Deck repair and rebuilds
Not every worn deck needs to come down. We replace damaged boards, loose railings and failing stairs, and repair dry rot. If the framing or footings underneath are compromised, we show you what we found and explain whether repair or a rebuild makes more sense.
Building near the coast
In Monterey, Carmel, Seaside and Marina, fog, moisture and salt air are hard on decks. We pay extra attention to drainage, ventilation under the deck, and corrosion-resistant fasteners and hardware, and we help you choose decking that holds up to coastal conditions.
What a deck costs in the Salinas area
We do not quote a single price before seeing your yard. Deck cost depends on:
- Size and height. Larger and higher decks need more framing, footings and railings.
- Material. Composite, redwood or cedar decking and railing systems.
- Features. Stairs, built-ins, covers and pergolas.
- Site conditions. Slopes, access and removal of an old deck.
What your estimate includes
A written, itemized estimate with scope of work, materials, pricing and timeline. No hidden fees, no surprises.
Deck permits
Under the California Residential Code, a deck generally needs a building permit if it is attached to the house, more than 30 inches above grade at any point, larger than 200 square feet, or serves an exit door. Cities and counties can amend these rules, so we confirm requirements with the City of Salinas or Monterey County before we build. In the City of Salinas, building permits are issued only to a licensed California contractor or the homeowner, so as a licensed contractor (CA #1090260) we can handle the application and inspections. Homes in unincorporated areas are permitted by Monterey County.
